たたかう【戦う･闘う】

1 〔戦争をする〕 open hostilities; make war 《on…》; wage [carry on] war 《against [with]…》; take (up) arms 《against…》; go to war.

●(ある)国を相手に戦う do [join] battle with a country; make war on [wage war against] a country

・宗主国と戦う fight against a suzerain state

・大敵を物ともせずに戦う fight gallantly against heavy odds.

●ドイツは当時フランスと戦っていた. At the [that] time Germany was at war with France.

2 〔戦闘を行う〕 fight 《with [against]…》; fight a battle; engage in battle; join battle 《with…》; battle; 〔一騎打ちで〕 combat; engage in combat 《with…》; 〔小ぜり合いをする〕 scuffle; skirmish; 〔迎えて戦う〕 encounter; meet; deal 《with…》.
